The red blend is named after a tradition that started in the Valley in the late 1800s. Locals would start fires and launch embers from Glacer Point resulting in a literal firefall. Today, the tradition continues in February but without the fires.  When the conditions are right, Horsetail Falls is illuminated by the setting sun making the waterfall look like burning embers on the face of El Capitan.
